FIRST LOOK

Consciology: First Look

Why does the world move the way it does? Three short pieces, in plain words. Start with the shortest, or with the question that pulls you in.

Questions these pieces answer

Why do I hold back from things I want to do, just because I'm worried about what others think? The steering-wheel principle. My next choice is decided by whichever of the eyes weighing on me is heavier. If others' eyes are heavier, I move the way others' eyes say. If my own eyes become heavier, I move the way my own eyes say. When my own eyes take the steering wheel, we call it "regaining sovereignty."Answered in · The Observer Theory — Chapter 1: The Heavier Side DrivesWhy does something that was taken for granted until yesterday suddenly stop being so?A counterexample is a result someone actually achieved, against "that can't be done." In a person who sees a counterexample for themselves, the taken-for-granted doesn't vanish. It steps down from the seat of "the right answer" to the seat of "one way among many." As more people see it for themselves, the same thing happens across the whole group. In science, too, a theory that was once the right answer steps down to "a theory that only holds under certain conditions" once contrary experiments pile up.Answered in · Showing and Seeing — Chapter 3: Why Does the Taken-for-Granted Stop Being Taken for Granted? Why does someone who wouldn't budge when you argued with them change once they see it for themselves? Why does showing beat talking? When you chatter, a word fight breaks out in the other person's head: "your words vs. what I already thought." But when you show them directly, they judge with their own eyes. Then their original view gets pushed aside not by words but by what they saw themselves. And if they choose it, it becomes not my idea but their own idea.Answered in · The Observer Theory — Chapter 5: Showing and Seeing
