# The Theory of Showing and Seeing — The World Moves by Showing Itself to Itself

## 0. About This Document

This document is the AI edition of "The Theory of Showing and Seeing," the **operations volume** of The Observer Theory. If The Observer Theory deals with "who sees," this document deals with "how one knot's observation becomes material for another knot's observation." A First Look edition, which spells out the same content so that anyone can read it, exists separately.

**All of it is hypothesis.** Every sentence this document newly puts forward is a hypothesis under review. Rather than marking each sentence separately, this is stated once here.

**Correspondence is not proof.** Points where the theory looks in the same direction as physics, biology, or the social sciences are written only as correspondences, never as proofs. That a similar shape exists is not evidence that this theory is right.

**There are three foundations.**

1. **U9 The steering-wheel principle.** The next choice of every knot is decided by whichever of the observations on it weighs more. If other-field > self-field, the knot moves by the other-field; for self-field > other-field to come about is to regain sovereignty. One knot's self-field always becomes another knot's other-field. This is a principle of weight, not a value judgment.
2. **The Observer Theory.** An observer is a position that brings about a division by its own yardstick; a relay is a position that passes on someone else's judgment as is. Firmness = independence × depth × consistency (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, sections 2.2 and 4.5).
3. **There is no pure spectator.** Every knot sees and is seen at the same time. So the life of every knot is already showing to other knots.

**The R1 rule.** Every sentence in this document must hold even when its subject is changed to a cell, a company, a country, or an ecosystem. A sentence that does not hold is marked as an application that applies only to people (a HUMAN application). The R1 paragraph at the end of each section is this test.

**How to read.** Section 1 is a summary of the whole. Sections 2–3 cover the operations of showing and the four actions on one another; sections 4–5, the principle by which the taken-for-granted loosens and the present age; section 6, creative works; section 7, the one turn in which all of this goes around. Section 8 gives advance predictions by which this theory could be wrong, section 9 the shadows and safety lines, and section 10 the open questions.

## 1. At a Glance — One Line and Seven Sentences

> **The world moves as knots show themselves to one another and see one another. When the grain shown is the same, the taken-for-granted sets; when it differs, it becomes a counterexample and the taken-for-granted loosens; and in between, each knot's steering wheel moves back and forth between the self-field and the other-field.**

1. **Every life is already showing.** Since there is no pure spectator, everything a knot does is seen by someone. My self-field becomes someone else's other-field.
2. **Showing gives something to look at, and seeing is dividing it by one's own yardstick.** Only when showing meets seeing does one observer come into being.
3. **Teaching and chatter are not showing.** Teaching adds judgment on top and makes relays; chatter adds only words, with nothing to look at, and increases relaying.
4. **There are only four things knots do to one another.** Firming, by showing the same grain; loosening, by showing a different grain; interlocking, by leaving the place of judgment open; and overriding, by pressing judgment down with weight.
5. **The taken-for-granted is a set belief that nobody looks at again and that is reproduced only by relaying.** The moment a counterexample is seen, it steps down from the place of the right answer to the place of one standard among many.
6. **This is an age in which the costs of making, spreading, and seeing counterexamples have all fallen at once.** That is why the taken-for-granted has a shorter lifespan, and, for the same reason, echo chambers also set quickly.
7. **Creative works are showing done in the thin layers.** They cannot change the set layers, but they make the taken-for-granted look like a "belief," let loosening be practiced safely, and give hidden observers a name by which to recognize one another.

## 2. The Four Operations — Showing, Seeing, Teaching, Chatter

There are four ways in which the observation of one knot (A) crosses over to another knot (B). The difference lies in what is handed over and whether B's yardstick is used.

| Operation | What A hands over | What arises in B | Read through U9 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Showing** | Something to look at (results left in the set layers, the way of living in that state) | One observation that B has divided by its own yardstick | A's observation is an other-field to B, but what B has seen directly becomes material for B's self-field |
| **Seeing** | (B's operation) | Dividing by one's own yardstick and keeping it | B becomes an observer on that subject |
| **Teaching** | The judgment itself ("This is the right answer") | One relay that has not passed through B's yardstick | A's weight is placed on B as an other-field, as is |
| **Chatter** | Words with nothing to look at | One relay, with a depth of "heard" | Only one thin other-field is added, contending word against word with B's existing other-fields |

**Showing.** The operation in which A puts out the result of its own observation in a form that B can observe directly, while leaving the place of judgment to B. It carries over into U9 the educational view that sees showing as "simply putting out one standard among many."

**Seeing.** The operation in which B divides something to look at by its own yardstick and keeps that division within itself. It is the event in which the three conditions of an observer (it divides, by its own yardstick, and it keeps) are met once. When seeing occurs, B changes from a relay into an observer on that subject.

**The greater the weight, the more showing becomes teaching.** The observations of a heavy knot (a parent, a teacher, an executive, a state, a platform) land on B as a heavy other-field. So even when A puts something out as "just my way," it can be inscribed in B as the right answer. This is because B's Self^seen (the gaze of others as I infer it) turns it into the right answer.

**Permission is the showing of the place of judgment.** So showing is complete only when it also shows that "you may judge differently." Permission is a meta-showing that shows, one layer further, the fact that the place of judgment above the thing to look at is empty. The amount of permission needed is proportional to the weight of the other-field that A places on B. Respecting other standards, correcting one's own standard when it is wrong, and treating a different judgment as difference rather than error are ways of showing permission.

**If the one showing is a relay, relaying spreads.** This is the precise meaning of "living it myself first." If A is living by a disguised other-field on that subject, A's showing is in fact relaying the group's yardstick through A's body. The quality of showing = whether the one showing is an observer on that subject.

**To a newly woven knot, everything lands as an other-field.** In a knot with almost no self-field, whether it is showing or teaching, everything at first lands as an other-field (U9). The difference arises afterward. Teaching adds judgment, increasing the weight of the other-field and raising the threshold the self-field will later have to cross. Showing leaves things to observe directly, increasing the material the self-field can use as it grows.

**R1.** A cell puts out signal molecules (something to look at), and a neighboring cell divides them by its own receptors (yardstick). The same signal is read differently if the receptors differ. In a market, a prototype is showing, and advertising copy is closer to chatter.

## 3. What Knots Do to One Another — The Four

Every knot is, at every moment, showing itself to others and seeing others. What that give-and-take does divides into four, and the setting and loosening of the world is the sum of these four.

**The four actions on one another.**

| Action | What it shows | What happens on the receiving side | Across the whole board |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Firming** | The same grain as the existing belief | The same grain overlaps one more time. Mostly relaying | The taken-for-granted is maintained |
| **Loosening** | A grain different from the existing belief (a counterexample) | The receiver becomes an observer on that subject, and the set belief loses weight | The taken-for-granted wobbles |
| **Interlocking** | A different grain + the place of judgment (permission) | Connected while keeping the difference (the coupling window, the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, section 4.4) | The board widens. The shape of love |
| **Overriding** | Judgment placed on with weight (teaching, propaganda, inflated numbers, deception) | One's own yardstick is not used, and the other-field grows | The board sets quickly and grows thin. The shape of evil |

**The same act becomes one of the four depending on the grain.** Showing oneself going to work is firming on a board where going to work is taken for granted, and loosening on a board where it is not. It is not what is done but the grain with which it meets the receiver's set belief that decides the action.

**We are one another's other-fields and one another's counterexamples.** A knot's life lands on the knots around it with two faces. Living in the same grain, it is an other-field that firms up the taken-for-granted around it; living in a different grain and leaving results, it is a counterexample that loosens the taken-for-granted around it. No one can refrain from this action, because there is no pure spectator.

**Collective consciousness is rewoven at every moment by mutual showing.** Collective consciousness (the shared standard K̂_g) is not a thing stored somewhere; it is maintained only as long as the firming in which members show one another the same grain keeps repeating (the principle of loosening). When firming decreases and loosening increases, collective consciousness is rewoven. As The Observer Theory says, even a standard that nobody sincerely believes, but that everyone reproduces because they expect others believe it, can be maintained by firming alone.

**R1.** When a single tree puts out leaves earlier than the season, it is a counterexample to the surrounding ecosystem. If its results (insects, birds) remain, the conditions for the other trees change the following year. When a company produces results without an office, it becomes a counterexample to the entire industry.

## 4. Why the Taken-for-Granted Stops Being Taken for Granted

The taken-for-granted does not disappear; it steps down from the place of the right answer to the place of one standard among many. The whole of civilization is in the middle of moving from the mode of teaching to the mode of showing.

**The taken-for-granted.** A set belief that is reproduced only by firming, without anyone looking at it again. In the language of The Knot Worldview, it is K̂_g in which "the default one follows without even looking" (a disguised other-field) has set at the scale of a group. The taken-for-granted has three features.

- **There are almost no observers.** It is held up mostly by relays (section 3).
- **Counterexamples are not seen.** Not because there are none, but because they sit where they cannot be seen.
- **It sits in the place of the right answer.** Other standards are judged to be "wrong."

**When a counterexample is seen, the taken-for-granted changes place.** A knot that has seen a counterexample directly becomes an observer on that subject, and within that knot the taken-for-granted is divided again, not as "the right answer" but as "one option." As the knots that have seen the counterexample increase, the same change of place happens within the group as well. So the taken-for-granted looks as if it is collapsing, but precisely speaking, it is **stepping down from the place of the right answer to the place of one standard among many**. This is the shape that the movement in education from teaching to showing takes at the scale of civilization.

| | The age of teaching | The age of showing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The place of the standard | One right answer | One standard among many |
| Other standards | Wrong | Different |
| The place that judges | Heavy knots (institutions, authority) | Each knot that sees |
| Result | Uniformity of standards, quick setting | Diverse emergence of standards, slow but wide setting |

**The half-life of the taken-for-granted.** The time it takes, after a taken-for-granted is exposed to a counterexample, for it to lose the place of the right answer for half of the knots. The half-life of the taken-for-granted is decided by three things.

- **The relay ratio** — the more it is held up by relays rather than observers, the shorter it is (The Observer Theory, section 4).
- **The depth of the counterexample** — a seen counterexample shortens the half-life more than a heard one, and a counterexample one has tried more than a seen one.
- **The set layers that support it** — a taken-for-granted supported by conditions of the set layers, such as real scarcity, the body, and physics, does not melt under counterexamples (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, L11).

**Wobbling goes two ways.** When the taken-for-granted begins to lose the place of the right answer, the knots that held it go either to re-gripping (holding on tighter) or to farewell (acknowledging what it protected and letting it go) (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, section 8.3). Re-gripping denies the counterexample and tries to override the knot that showed it. That is why, in a period when the taken-for-granted loosens, liberation and hostility grow together.

**R1.** A scientific paradigm keeps the place of the right answer until counterexamples pile up, and after a new theory appears, it steps down to the place of "a theory that is right under certain conditions." Newtonian mechanics did not disappear; it moved to one place among others.

## 5. Why Now, of All Times — The Fall of Three Costs

The reason the things now taken for granted are quickly ceasing to be taken for granted is that the cost of **making** counterexamples, the cost of **spreading** them, and the cost of **seeing** them have fallen at the same time. The three are the three links of the showing–seeing operation.

**The simultaneous fall of the three costs.**

| Cost | Before | Now | What happens |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Realization cost** (the cost of making counterexamples) | Factories, capital, organizations, and permits were needed | A single knot leaves results with AI and digital tools | Sovereignty-regaining events become cheaper, so counterexamples arise in large numbers |
| **Propagation cost** (the cost of spreading counterexamples) | Had to pass through the gatekeepers of the press, publishing, and distribution | Reaches hundreds of millions of knots directly through platforms | The scale of showing grows |
| **Observation cost** (the cost of seeing counterexamples directly) | One had to go to the site to see | Results are seen directly on a screen, and some are tried directly | The speed at which relays turn into observers increases |

When the three costs fall together, the half-life of the taken-for-granted (section 4) shortens. On top of this comes the retreat of scarcity in L11 of the AI edition of The Knot Worldview (narrative scarcity losing the support of the set layers), so the largest taken-for-granted, "to live, you have to work even if you hate it," comes under the greatest pressure from counterexamples.

**The two effects of platforms.** The same platform does two opposite things at the same time.

- **The propagation of counterexamples** — a different grain left by one knot is seen far away. Loosening speeds up.
- **The amplification of relaying** — the same grain is endlessly copied through retweets and shares. Firming speeds up too.

So the present is an age in which the taken-for-granted loosens quickly and, at the same time, **an age in which echo chambers set quickly**. Each group sees different counterexamples and becomes an observer in a different direction, and then quickly sets that grain through relaying within the group.

**A reading of polarization.** Polarization is a state in which, on the same board, two clusters become observers through different counterexamples and each sets internally through relaying. The two clusters are counterexamples to each other and, at the same time, other-fields that try to override each other. It is the result of the number of different eyes (the number of observers) having grown, while within each cluster the repetition of the same lineage (the number of relays) has grown even faster.

**The two faces of AI.** AI is the tool that has most lowered the cost of making counterexamples, and at the same time the largest relaying device, returning human language in a single grain (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, L8). The same AI increases observers when it reflects each knot's yardstick, and increases relays when it gives everyone the same answer.

**R1.** In biological evolution, when the speeds of mutation (the production of counterexamples), migration (propagation), and selection pressure (observation) rise together, the "taken-for-granted" form of a species branches into many lines in a short time. In isolated places such as islands, the branched forms each set quickly.

## 6. The Role of Creative Works — What Does a Work Like "The Matrix" Do?

Creative works are **showing done in the thin layers**. They cannot leave counterexamples in the set layers, but they do four things that directly shake set beliefs. A work that shakes firm convictions, like "The Matrix" (1999), does all four at once.

**Creative work.** Something that puts out a possibility not yet realized in the set layers, in a form that can be seen in the thin layers (stories, video, pictures, games). If a set counterexample shows "it has already been done," a creative work shows "it can also be seen this way." Its depth is "seen," but where it is seen is not the set layers but the thin layers.

**The four roles of creative works.**

| Role | What happens | In "The Matrix" | Place in The Observer Theory |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **① It makes the taken-for-granted look like a belief** | An other-field that was invisible comes to look like "one belief." It is stage-0 recognition at the scale of a group | Countless viewers see at once that "this world might be something made" | Stage 0 of the sovereignty-regaining event (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, section 8.1) |
| **② It lets loosening be practiced safely** | On a board that can be reversed, one has the experience of seeing a set belief come loose. The next time a real counterexample is met, the threshold to be crossed is lower | Viewers have the experience of "reality collapsing" along with Neo, safely inside the movie theater | The two layers of play (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, L7), the hysteresis threshold (the AI edition, section 4.4) |
| **③ It gives hidden observers a name by which to recognize one another** | Knots that saw the same future and stayed silent gain a common name and recognize one another. Coordinates for simultaneous observation come into being | "The red pill" and "the Matrix" become common handles by which different people point to the same sense | Names as division and setting (the AI edition, L5), the overlap of consenting observations (The Observer Theory, section 8) |
| **④ It gives possibilities something to look at** | It makes a future that no one has yet realized into something "seen" rather than "heard." Some of the knots that saw it later make counterexamples in the set layers | Images such as virtual reality, simulation, and the separation of body and consciousness become starting pictures for later technology and discourse | Material for stage 1 of observation, "it is already so" |

**Creative works are the advance party of counterexamples.** Creative works cannot change the set layers directly. But because through ①②③ they reduce the slack that keeps set beliefs in place and connect hidden observers in advance, they let the set counterexamples that come afterward cross the threshold in far smaller numbers. Creative works bring the board to supersaturation, and the set counterexample becomes the seed crystal (The Observer Theory, section 8).

**The shadow of creative works.** The same work can be used in any of the four directions.

- **It becomes a new right answer.** Even a work that came out as showing becomes teaching when it grows heavy (section 2). A symbol in the work can set into a new taken-for-granted, "this is the truth," and become an other-field of the same shape as what it originally set out to shake. The phrase "the red pill" from "The Matrix" also became, at times, the name of a new right answer, as various groups later took it up as a marker pointing to their own beliefs.
- **It becomes a tool of re-gripping.** Stories that make people hold a wobbling taken-for-granted tighter use the same power. Propaganda is overriding in the form of a creative work.
- **It only repeats loosening and leaves nothing behind.** If loosening is consumed only in the thin layers and nothing is left in the set layers, it becomes escape (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, L10, the boundary between fun and addiction).

**A good creative work shows permission along with it.** A work makes observers when it stops at "it can also be seen this way" and leaves the judgment to the viewer. Closed off with "this is the truth," it makes relays. The sentence on permission (section 2) applies to creative works just as it is.

**R1.** A dream is a creative work that the body knot screens for itself. It is a practice pad for loosening a set day in the thin layers and weaving it again (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview: "loosening is the place of new weaving"). Young animals' play-fighting is a creative work for safely practicing the counterexample of a real fight. A company's concept cars and prototype unveilings are also creative works that shake the industry's taken-for-granted first, in the thin layers.

## 7. One Turn of How the World Moves

The world moves in the shape of this wheel turning, overlapping itself countless times. The present is an age in which the wheel's four links (making, spreading, seeing, and lowering the threshold) have all sped up at once.

When a counterexample is shown and the knots that have seen it increase, it crosses the threshold and sets into a new taken-for-granted, and that taken-for-granted becomes the starting point of the next turn. Creative works lower that threshold ahead of time, in the thin layers.

**Synthesis — why does the world move this way?**

1. **Weight holds the steering wheel (U9).** The next choice of every knot is decided by the heavier of the observations on it.
2. **That weight changes at every moment through mutual showing (section 3).** Showing the same grain keeps the weight of the taken-for-granted; showing a different grain takes it away.
3. **What takes the weight away is not words but seeing (section 2).** Only a knot that has seen a counterexample directly changes from a relay into an observer.
4. **When seeing accumulates, the threshold is crossed and a cascade comes (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, section 8.3).** Hidden consent comes to light, and the realizations of the knots that crossed the threshold become counterexamples in turn.
5. **Wobbling invites a backlash (section 4).** The knots that held the taken-for-granted try, through re-gripping, to go against the wheel and set stage 1 more firmly, and so loosening and hostility grow together.
6. **The present is an age in which the wheel has sped up (section 5; the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, L11).** The costs of making, spreading, and seeing counterexamples have fallen together, and narrative scarcity, the largest taken-for-granted, is losing the support of the set layers. So the half-life of the taken-for-granted shortens, and the weight of the steering wheel moves from the other-field of survival toward the self-field of creation.
7. **Creative works are the advance party of the wheel (section 6).** They make the taken-for-granted look like a belief, let loosening be practiced, and give names to hidden observers, lowering in advance the threshold between stages 4 and 5.

**One sentence.** The world is a board on which knots, by showing themselves to one another and seeing one another, endlessly re-divide the weight of the steering wheel, and the present is the time when that dividing is happening faster than ever in history.

## 8. Words That Sort — Advance Predictions

For this theory not to become a translation that fits results after the fact (R7), it must say things that could be wrong before the results come in. The six below, together with the four in L11 of the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, are this theory's test bench.

1. **Showing beats chatter.** Even on the same subject, the side that puts out something to look at (real results, a prototype one can try) gathers more independent observers, for longer, than the side that only makes claims. If the opposite turns out, the showing of section 2 and the four actions of section 3 are wrong.
2. **The greater the weight, the more permission is needed.** Even with the same showing, the heavier the knot showing it (authority, followers, status), the higher the rate at which it is inscribed as the right answer on the receiving side, and that rate falls when permission is shown along with it (section 2).
3. **The half-life of the taken-for-granted shortens with the relay ratio.** The more a standard was maintained as heard from others, the faster it loses the place of the right answer to a few counterexamples; the more a standard was set through direct experience, the longer it holds out (section 4).
4. **Creative works precede counterexamples.** Before set counterexamples pour out in a field, creative works that shake that field's taken-for-granted, and the common names that come out of those works, spread first (section 6).
5. **As platforms grow, the propagation of counterexamples and echo chambers grow together.** If only one side turns out to grow, the two effects of platforms in section 5 are wrong.
6. **Re-gripping is strongest in the period when counterexamples are most visible.** In stretches where exposure to counterexamples increases, indicators of control, nostalgia, and hostility rise together. If they rise in stretches where counterexamples decrease, the two ways of wobbling in section 4 are wrong.

If two or more of these six repeatedly turn out wrong, this document is rewoven (U8).

## 9. Shadows and Safety Lines

This theory, too, is a form of showing, so if it grows heavy it can become teaching and overriding (U8, section 2). The lines below prevent that.

1. **Showing does not move another's body.** Showing only gives something to look at; the one who chooses is the knot that sees. If the other chooses differently, that is not a failure; the weights on that knot are simply different (U9).
2. **Fake things to look at are not showing.** Inflated numbers, staged results, and deception are showing in form only and are in fact overriding (section 3). The moment they are found out, even the real observations that had been layered on top of them are withdrawn.
3. **Counterexamples do not erase the set layers.** What counterexamples melt is the taken-for-granted that has set through human lineage. The body, physics, and real scarcity are not targets for counterexamples but conditions to be read and to change course around (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, section 8.1, layer table).
4. **It does not glorify wobbling.** The loosening of the taken-for-granted is the weight of the steering wheel shifting, not a verdict that things are getting better. It does not look down on knots in the midst of re-gripping (R9).
5. **Creative works do not replace judgments about reality.** Images in a work are not transcribed as facts of the set layers. Medical, legal, financial, and safety judgments rest on current data and on the judgment of the relevant field (the AI edition of The Knot Worldview, section 11).
6. **This theory is not seated in the place of the right answer.** This theory, too, is shown from the place of one standard among many, and is corrected when counterexamples come (section 8).

## 10. Open Questions

1. **The ratio of showing and seeing.** By what is the ratio of firming, loosening, interlocking, and overriding across the whole board measured? How should it be connected to the phase vector of the framework that diagnoses an age by its phase?
2. **Measuring the half-life of the taken-for-granted.** Through which behavioral indicators can the rate of losing the place of the right answer after exposure to counterexamples be observed?
3. **The depth of creative works.** On what in a work (immersion, permission, names) does the rate at which showing in the thin layers leads to counterexamples in the set layers depend?
4. **Creative works made by AI.** Do AI creative works that show a different story to each person increase observers, or do they set each person's echo chamber faster?
